What's the Lake District like in winter? – 3 pros and cons of visiting out of season

The Lake District can get extremely busy at peak times of the year, but have you ever considered visiting in the winter months? Here, I outline a few quick pros and cons of visiting “out of season”!

Pros

1.      It's quiet. If you compare the main honey spots in January to the same places in August, you'd hardly recognise them. Car parking is easier, you'll get a seat in your favourite pub, have walking paths to yourself, and drive around in reasonable journey times.

2.      It's cheaper. Accommodation is a lot cheaper out of season. Whether you’re looking for a cottage or a hotel, they’ll set you back considerably less. Most hotels will offer deals on top as well, such as multi night deals or meals included. There are some real bargains to be had!

3.      It's cosy and beautiful. Crispy fresh air walks across frosty paths, views of snow-capped mountains and pastel-coloured skies. Followed up with log fires, hearty pies, real ales, hot chocolates or mulled wines. Flasks of tea and cake, Jacuzzis and hot baths. Winter can be really magical in the lakes!

Cons

1.      The weather might not play ball. Ok so the weather might not play ball in summer either! But winter can be another level. There are often wintery conditions, snow or ice, especially in the mountains. This requires a whole different set of skills, experience and equipment that often takes hill walking off the cards for many walkers. And that's without mentioning the roads; ice, floods and trees down are common over winter, so travel can often be affected.

2.      The days are short. This is one that lots of people don't consider. In the depths of winter it's dark by 4pm. That means planning your walk to finish by like 3 if you're being sensible. If you're coming to the lakes for outdoor activities, that seriously limits your time each day.  You need to be able to fill your evenings indoors with something.

3.      Businesses can be limited. Some places shut for extended periods for refurbishment, some limit their hours to a few days a week, and some reduce their offerings. Your favourite pub might be closed, the local cafe might not serve food, and shops might not be an option.

I hope that helps. Maybe you’re ready to try your first winter trip, or maybe you’ve realised the summer is still for you!
